Pests
and Beneficials of Papaya in Australia
A new full colour
poster featuring the insect and mite pests of papaya has been
produced as a guide for growers and others associated with
this expanding industry in Australia.
The papaya
plant is subject to attack from a wide range of pests however
there are also many useful predators and parasites that provide
effective control. Growers need to be able to recognise the
early symptoms of pest damage and their causes.
The poster
will help in this regard as it provides clear photographs
of the pests and their damage, enabling rapid identification
of problems. The poster will prove useful to anyone ranging
from the commercial growers through to the backyard gardener
with a few papaya plants in their garden. The poster is visually
appealing.
An artist
was commissioned to prepare the major painting of a papaya
tree featured in the centre of the poster. High quality photographs
were obtained of the pests and their damage as well as the
beneficials. The information on the poster is presented in
simple English for the non-technical reader.
The poster
measures 970mm by 650mm and is available either un-laminated
or with a high quality 80 micron laminate.
Pests
featured include the major pests such as fruit spotting bug,
two spotted mite and scale insects. In addition a number of
other pests including fruit flies, fruit piercing moth, spiraling
whitefly, and yellow peach moth are featured. The damage produced
by each pest is illustrated as well as the more important
beneficials that help provide biological control.
The poster
will also prove useful to packing and export houses, agricultural
suppliers, government and private agricultural advisors, Australian
and international quarantine authorities, and educational
institutions.

BANANA
BELL INJECTION
One
of the more important tasks on banana farms is to protect
the developing bunches from insect pests.
Bell
injection has provided growers with a pest control technique
that is highly effective, cost efficient and environmentally
friendly. It is a task that requires a level of understanding
of the internal structure of the emerging banana bell
in order to achieve the best result.
Previously
Scientific Advisory Services had produced a number of
posters on bell injection for individual grower clients
and conducted training courses for bell injecting staff.
It was decided that there was a need for a clear illustration
of the internal structure of a banana bell that growers
and their workers could use. The poster could be referred
to, when training new workers or addressing problems
that might be occurring with current work practices.
The
large laminated colour wall poster "Banana Bell
Injection" has been produced to provide a ready
reference for banana farms. It measures 970mm by 650mm.
The pests and the damage they produce on young and mature
fruit are illustrated as well as the stages of bell
emergence that determine whether or not injection will
be most effective.
The
purpose of the poster is not to teach people how to
bell inject but to show the reasons behind the WHY,
HOW and WHEN of this job. The only way to
train someone is of course to show them by practical
example. The poster will prove valuable both in the
training of new workers and by timely reference to it
when problems occur.

INSECT
AND MITE PESTS OF BANANAS IN AUSTRALIA
Bananas
are subject to attack by a wide variety of insect and mite
pests.
The
early recognition of these pests and their damage by farmers
or their workers enables control measures to be performed
before further damage occurs. The wall poster "Insect and
Mite Pests of Bananas in Australia" has been produced by Scientific
Advisory Services in order to provide a useful reference for
banana packing sheds and farm offices.
The
poster features the major pests of bananas throughout Australia
and the damage they cause, as well as a number of species,
which occur in limited areas. A total of twelve pests are
illustrated in addition to the important beneficial insect,
the mite-eating ladybird.
The
major pests are the banana weevil borer, banana rust thrips,
sugarcane bud moth, banana spider mite, banana aphid, and
banana flower thrips. The part of the banana plant which is
attacked is illustrated by means of arrows to the large central
banana plant and the main feature to note from this is the
importance of insect and mite pests to the bunch.
The
poster measures 970mm by 650mm and is both informative and
pleasing to the eye. One grower who has placed the poster
on a wall in his packing shed has said that rarely a week
goes by without him or his workers referring to the poster.
The poster has been obtained by banana growers, government
agriculture departments, agrichemical companies, educational
institutions and both Australian and international quarantine
authorities.
